Dec. 8, 2025 -- The Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency and the City of Scranton have declared a Code Blue Frigid Weather Alert for the following nights this week:

8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, until 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9 (expected wind chill 6 degrees)
8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, until 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10 (expected wind chill 19 degrees, potential for mixed precipitation in the morning)
8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, until 7 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11 (expected wind chill 17 degrees, mixed precipitation late night/early morning)
8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, until 7 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 12 (expected wind chill 13 degrees)
8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, until 7 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13 (expected wind chill 9 degrees)

Code Blue is a weather alert issued during extreme cold (temperatures expected to drop below 20 degrees), triggering a plan to help vulnerable populations, especially the homeless. Emergency shelter can be found at the following locations:

Anthony's Haven, 409 Olive St., Scranton, open 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Weston Field House, 982 Providence Road, Scranton, open at 7:30 p.m.
Community Intervention Center(CIC), 445 North 6th Ave., Scranton, open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (open later if need requires).

Important tips during extreme cold:
-- Make sure your car is winterized: antifreeze, full tank of gas, inflated tires and emergency kit.
-- Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
-- Do not operate generators in enclosed spaces and make sure they are vented properly.
-- Wear appropriate clothing and avoid prolonged exposure.
-- Check on your elderly neighbors and limit outdoor time for pets.
-- Report power outages directly to your utility company -- do not call 911.
-- Call 911 for life threating emergencies.
